2020 has been a difficult year for both kids and adults alike. From school closures to financial struggles and social distancing, we have all felt the struggles of COVID-19. The reality is that our children have been hit very hard by the pandemic, and we owe it to them to do our best to provide some semblance of normalcy through all of this. Here at the Greater Miami Valley YMCA, we have been working tirelessly to make sure that we are providing our youth with the same sports they know and love in a safe and responsible way. With that in mind, we are proud to announce that we will be offering our January-February youth basketball program. Safety in Youth Sports

Safety for both our players and our spectators has never been more important, and we have worked hard to ensure that every person who takes part in our programs is as safe as possible. We have done this by going above and beyond and exceeding the requirements set upon us by the CDC and other health and safety agencies. All players, family members, and spectators will have their temperatures checked and have a wellness screening before entering the gym, ensuring that our gyms stay COVID-19 free throughout the entirety of the game.

We will also limit spectators to two parents or guardians per player. Parents and guardians will need to enter with the player in order to ensure that we have an accurate headcount for spectators to ensure that we keep a fully socially distanced gym. All players and spectators will be required to wear facemasks, though players will be allowed to remove their face covering for the duration of the game. We know that these regulations aren’t always fun to talk about, but we take your family’s health extremely seriously, and we want to make sure that we are going above and beyond to keep our youth leagues safe for each and every player.

Basketball isn’t just one of the most fun sports to watch, it is extremely healthy to play. Basketball not only burns a ton of calories, with most players running between 2-4 miles every game, but it can dramatically boost cardiovascular health. Every game or scrimmage is equivalent to a full aerobic workout, helping blood pump throughout the body and dramatically reducing the risk of heart attacks later in life. Growing bodies benefit immensely from basketball, as the sport both develops and improves bone strength and muscle development. Basketball isn’t just good for your body; it is great for mental health. The socialization and physical nature of basketball releases endorphins, boosting positivity and benefitting your child’s overall attitude.
