Butler Tech and the Great Miami Valley YMCA are partnering to improve child care for the community. Effective Monday, April 11, 2016, the YMCA will assume operations of the D. Russel Lee Child Development Center, resulting in expanded educational opportunities for Butler Tech students and expanded hours of operation.
The Butler Tech Early Childhood Education program provides career-technical training to junior and senior high school students interested in pursuing careers in caring for children aged 18 months to five years. With the addition of YMCA programming, Butler Tech students will gain expertise in standards set by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. This will help better prepare students to earn industry credentials required by most licensed child care centers in Ohio.
“Our Early Child Development program was previously designed to meet Ohio Department of Education Preschool Licensing rules, which served as a very good foundation for our graduates,” said Mike Parry, Executive Director of Secondary Education for Butler Tech. “Because the YMCA operates under Ohio Department of Job and Family Services standards, we can now build on that foundation and provide even greater learning opportunities.”
The Early Childhood Education curriculum teaches students business skills needed to operate a child care center, including curriculum design, nutrition, assessment, language development and safety. Students are able to use the knowledge to work as a preschool teacher, or advance to a post-secondary two or four year program in Early Childhood Education.
“We are excited to work with Butler Tech students and offer them a pathway to future employment,” said Teresa Gagnon, Executive Director of Childcare Quality Assurance with the Great Miami Valley YMCA. “As a leading provider of child care in the community, we always search for the most qualified, credentialed candidates to work in our child care centers. This partnership will give Butler Tech graduates a tremendous advantage to become familiar with our standards and processes.”
Under the operation of the YMCA, the D. Russel Lee Early Learning Center will now operate year-round and feature longer hours of service. Hours of operation will be Monday – Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. The Early Learning Center will be closed on holidays when Butler Tech administrative offices are closed.
